Enterprise Around Mining

Extractives & Development contributes to dialogue on business opportunities in the African mining sector

Workshop: Mining Opportunities in Africa

21.03.2016 |

The workshop "Mining Opportunities in Africa", hosted by the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the German Federation of International Mining and Mineral Resources was held on March 17th and 18th in Berlin.

The event facilitated a dialogue between African representatives, German companies and officials on markets, market entry and business opportunities for German investment in and around the mining sector in Africa.

Southern Africa was chosen as the regional focus with particular emphasis on Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Mozambique, South Africa, Zambia and Tanzania. Financing and project development, technology transfer, environment and sustainability where amongst the most prominently debated issues.

Dr. Sven Renner represented Extractives & Development with a presentation on Enterprise Around Mining (EAM). In his talk he analyzed the challenges and opportunities for local value addition in the region. Despite a persisting price downturn on the metal markets worldwide, production of the most important mineral commodities on the African continent is on the rise. A growth in production then translates into increasing business opportunities of supplier industries.

Many countries in Southern Africa however do not possess the necessary economies of scale to profit from these opportunities. Moving towards a stronger local supplier industry thus requires a focus on regional markets. In these regional markets business partnerships between local and international companies have the potential to grow and to leave a larger share of added value in the region.

The workshop came to an end with the closing remarks of Mr Günter Nooke, the Commissioner for Africa and the German Chancellor’s Personal Representative for Africa.
