Overview of major governance initiatives in the extractives sector

28.11.2019 |

Over the last years, there has been a proliferation of benchmarking frameworks designed to promote good governance of the extractives sector. Some of these good governance initiatives measure and evaluate the governance of the extractives sector of a particular country, others make recommendations on how to improve the framework conditions in the sector or set standards. This mapping undertaken by the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment (CCSI), with the support of the Sector Programme Extractives and Development, provides a systematic overview of major governance initiatives in the extractives sector.

Across a set of selected indicators (such as actors involved, theory of change) measures targeting governments are portrayed. The mapping provides information on each initiative and may also facilitate selection of the appropriate measure in a specific context.

The following initiatives are included in the mapping:

• the Natural Resource Governance Institute's (NRGI) Resource Governance Index;
• the Fraser Institute Annual Survey of Mining and Exploration Companies;
• the NRGI`s Natural Resource Charter and accompanying Benchmarking Framework;
• the Africa Mining Vision and the related African Minerals Governance Framework;
• the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development`s Mining Policy Framework;
• the World Bank`s Mining Investment and Governance Review;
• the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development`s Policy Dialogue on Natural Resource Based Development;
• the World Economic Forum`s Responsible Mineral Development Initiative des World Economic Forums (WEF); und
• the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) Standard.
