Our new factsheet provides information about typical environmental risks and governance challenges of coal mine closure from a development perspective. It also addresses the question of how to support their minimization.

The discussion about how a Just Transition would look like often focuses on economic and social issues, environmental aspects are given less consideration in this debate. However, poorly planned closures or abandonment of mines generate detrimental environmental conditions and related environmental injustices. A Just Transition in the mining sector thus implies that adverse environmental impacts are prevented, reduced or mitigated. Our new information sheet provides information on typical environmental risks and governance challenges of coal mine closure, and ways in which international cooperation can support a Just Transition in the mining sector.
