Last week the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) once again organized a learning and networking event in its Responsible Gold series. Committed and interested representatives from the private sector, civil society, politics and academia had the opportunity to exchange views on the challenges and oppportunitites for responsible gold sourcing.

“Human Rights-Responsible Raw Materials Extraction” - A Discussion with the European Partnership for Responsible Minerals (EPRM) Internal link

Raw material extraction is associated worldwide with high human rights risks. The European Partnership for Responsible Minerals (EPRM) strengthens responsible supply chains in high-risk regions, particularly in informal artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). To mark the International Day for Human Rights on December 10th, Lisa Süß and Mayely Müller explain how the EPRM effectively reduces human rights risks in the extractives sector as a multi-stakeholder initiative.

From Global Forum to Local Change: Patricia Rabanye Turns Civil Society Voices into Action for South-African Mining Communities Internal link

In 2024, the Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” invited Patricia Rabanye from the South African civil society organisation MACUA/WAMUA to speak on a panel at the OECD Forum on Responsible Mineral Supply Chains in Paris. One year later, we followed up to discuss her perceptions about the impact of her participation as well as the ongoing struggles mining-affected communities and women in South Africa face.

  4. 18–19 June 2026, in-person event, Berlin
    MiningForum

    Leading international conference for the mining and raw materials sector in Germany and a key networking platform for the industry. The two-day event brings together international experts, decision-makers and thought leaders in Berlin to discuss the most pressing challenges and opportunities for a long-term stable supply of raw materials.

  5. 29–30 June 2026, in-person event, Hamburg
    Hamburg Sustainability Conference

Who are we?

On behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” is jointly implemented by the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ).

The Sector Programme “Extractives and Development” supports the BMZ in shaping the national and international development policy agenda in the extractive sector through its own impulses and innovations, and advises the BMZ continuously and comprehensively on economic and policy issues related to extractives.
