Training on Basics of Petroleum Geology

Agreement of collaboration between BGR and the Somali MPMR

08.05.2017 |

In context of the ongoing cooperation with the Somali Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MPMR) a third training was held between the 24/04/17 and the 28/04/17 in Nairobi. Facilitated by Extractives and Development and conducted by the University of Nairobi (UoN), the participants renewed their knowledge of geology and gained new insights, particularly in the sub field of petroleum geology. For the first time in the ongoing cooperation with MPMR, a training was joined by Master’s students of UoN. The joint course allowed for an exchange between students and MPMR officials over matters of geology that only rarely occurs due to the tense political situation between Kenya and Somalia.

The training also provided an opportunity for planning of future cooperation activities. For this purpose Hon. Minister Abdulrashid Mohamed Ahmed led a MPMR delegation to Nairobi, which was met by the head of BGR’s department for International Cooperation and Geoinformation, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Stribrny and E&D program officers.

As a next step in the ongoing cooperation, MPMR will second one staff member to BGR in Hannover, where the individual will receive a one-the-job training in the interpretation of reflection seismic data. The training will begin in summer 2017 and continue over the course of one year – a suitable timeframe to sustainably deepen the relation between the two institutions.
